Characters

One of the great things about Touhou is the massive diversity in it’s cast.  This is a constant source of inspiration both to us and to hundreds of other fans who create Touhou fiction, art and games.  If I could I’d give every single character ever a cameo somewhere (note: include magic stone reference) and have a lot more speaking roles.

Unfortunately brutal reality forces us to concentrate on a smaller subset of that character base.  Not only do we need consistent characters for the story itself, but our artist quite frankly doesn’t have the three years it would take to make decent pose sets for every character that we’d like to put in.   So in a very painful process we cut down our character roster.

Still our current character set is around 30 characters, not counting cameos.  We tried to spread things out as much as we could among the windows cast (though the SDM makes that difficult…) and we made sure to keep a few cameos for those who love PC-98.  So there will be plenty of the odd interactions that are so much fun for us as writers and hopefully for our fellow fans.

We’ll be keeping some (okay a lot) of our cards in our hand, but in addition to our heroine and the lovely leads (Alice, Patchouli, Reimu and Flandre) we’ll be including:

Sanae
Nitori
Koakuma
Youmu
Mystia
Sakuya
Rinnosuke
Koishi
Suika

This is obviously not an exhaustive list, but there should be some mystery.  I can say that I’ve now given out the name of our hidden romantic interest though.  What can I say.  I’m always bad about dropping hints…

The Plot

Of course our VN has a large amount of space devoted to having Marisa and whichever love interest you pick get to know each other and start a long term relationship.  But there’s a lot more to this story then just Marisa falling in love.

Most importantly is Marisa’s attempts to become immortal (thus the subtitle Eternal Dilemma) and the complications around it.  That will have a big impact on her relationships with the other residents of Gensoukyo, and on Marisa as well.  Transforming yourself into a youkai is a big deal, as is deciding to live your days out as a human, and either of those choices will affect you status as a friend or partner with the other girls.   (And then there’s the hidden desperation option….)

In addition because Gensoukyo is such a small place, there’s a lot of other things going on as well.  No matter which girl Marisa falls for there’s going to be friendships to maintain, overeager suitors to dissuade, and of course things to steal incidents to resolve.  We’ve done our best to try to keep things lively at all times.

Getting In Gear

Hello again.  You’ll be seeing quite a few more of these posts start to pop up in the near future.  That’s because we’ve finally gotten enough written down to start looking at forming a demo.  There’s a lot of art and music left to pull together for that (the poor artists get most of their work at the beginning) but we’ve got a solid base to work from.

A lot has happened since this little project started as a pie in the sky dream cooked up in a moment of boredom on an image board.  When we first started the plan that we first cooked up was even more grandiose then what we have now.  We were going to give the character free reign to wander Gensoukyo, meeting people at random and chatting to them in the vein of Persona social links.  It was a grand idea, in theory.

But as we moved along we found that didn’t really work out the way we liked.  Gensoukyo is a small interconnected world, and Marisa is no faceless protagonist.  (Also the number of conditionals we had were insane.)  So we ended up changing it back to a more standard VN style.  There’s still a lot of options for the player, and a lot of stories for those residents, but now they’re interwoven into a world that cares what you do.  Or at least, that’s what we’re hoping for.

We’ve also had a lot of internal script changes.  Little things here and there that didn’t work out (or were just better a different way), deciding what side characters made the cut (a very very painful job), and setting the characters personalities.  Still, every step backward leads to two steps forwards.  And we’re getting more and more confident with each barrier we pass.

We’re in what we hope is our final recruitment phase,  (Graph is pure awesome, but there’s only so much he can do solo) and once we get past that we’re going to be on a countdown to our demo.  In the meantime we’ll be giving little hints to our story and process out here.  I hope you all enjoy it.

Guess I’m up first…

Hello, this is Iced Fairy.  I’m one of the lead writers and the unofficial general continuity editor.

I’ve done a several Touhou fanworks before working on this project, as well as some minor works for other fandoms.  I’ve also been part of some commercial development teams, though not sadly in the gaming field.

I’m already enjoying the work we’re putting together, and I really look forward to when we can get you all a demo of what we’ve created.   We’ve got a great core team together here, and I really believe we can pull together a very nice game for you all.

We’ve got a lot of work ahead of us but hopefully at the end, the results will make you laugh, cry and make small voodoo dolls of us in rage.  I’ll be working hard for that day.

Until later then.
